The Los Angeles Times is reporting that two semiautomatic weapons used by the San Bernardino couple who killed 14 people were purchased by a friend at the request of killer Syed Farook. The article states that the weapons were purchased by friend and then-neighbor Enrique Marquez who apparently told agents that Farook claimed he thought he would not pass the background check. Marquez has been arrested.
Marquez legally purchased the two firearms in 2011 and 2012, around the same time that Farook had plotted to carry out an earlier attack. Farook asked Marquez to purchase the weapons on his behalf because he did not want them traced to him and doubted he could pass a background check, the sources said.

The weapons were legally purchased.
Huffpo, in a 07 Dec article, has links to California gun laws, however, these guns were legal in California, though had been illegally modified.
What a frigging mess, as the article indicates. Lots of loose ends here.
